Benefits of Dance Competitions

Following on from our goal setting article last month and considering our upcoming competition, this month we will discuss the benefits of competition. We focus on the fun of a competition not the winning. We want everyone to be encouraged to compete and better themselves if they wish.

One major benefit of a dance competition is a sense of achievement. Not in the placings but in the setting of a goal and achieving it. Setting a goal such as implementing improvements worked on in class or to get through a new dance are great competition goals to have. Taking the focus away from the actual placings and awards makes a competition more about improving oneself instead of beating others.

Strive to do your BEST, whatever that may be.

Competitions offer inspiration. They get you out of your comfort zone in class and allow you to see what others can do. This helps to motivate you to improve yourself. You might see a step you haven’t seen before or a different timing to one you do and this is a great learning opportunity.

Another benefit is making new friends outside of your studio. With so many people there with the same passion as you, it’s a perfect environment to make some new friends. Just because you are competing against each other does not mean you can’t be friends and encourage each other. This helps to promote healthy sportsmanship which is a lifelong skill that will help you the rest of your life outside of dance.

Always remember competitions are subjective and it is only one day. Try your best, have fun and don’t forget to smile!
