Dance Goals

Dance is something everyone can do in some shape or form. This year we will be focusing on creating goals for ourselves and working towards those goals. The focus will not be on trying to beat others in competition but instead to have some measurable outcomes we can see. Whether that is for us to get all our steps right, get up on stage for the first time or learn a new dance from start to finish, we will create them together and encourage each other to get there.

A short-term goal is a smaller goal that you set, that can be reasonably reached in a shorter amount of time such as two weeks or a month.  Goals do not always have to be huge!  Each goal you set should be individualized to your needs.

Some great short-term goals are:

Attend an extra class each week for a month

Technique goals such as: Use my plie more in my jumps, keep my arms still while in the air etc.

Learning a new movement such as shedding, pas de basques.

Stand in the front-line during exercises to increase my confidence!

It is easy to track short term goals so when you achieve them you get a big feeling of accomplishment and pride for getting there.

I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself.

A long-term goal is a bigger goal that is usually reached in 6 months, a year, or even 2 years depending on your goals.  Long term goals also depend on the dancer.  Some dancers may see learning a new dance as a short-term goal, while others will need more time because this is more difficult for them!

Examples of long-term goals include:

Getting my half point!

Moving up to the next class level

Getting my leaps wider and higher

Split High cuts!

Happy dancing!
